The Cyber-Hood

Recently several stories have come out announcing in different ways what we have all known for some time.  Myspace is the ghetto of the internet.

It has become so bad in fact that in a recent lecture there was a discussion of people leaving myspace for facebook, twitter and linkdin.  In the lecture this was referred to as internet “white flight.” This is because more affluent and Caucasian people are quitting myspace for the other networks.  I myself have recently contributed to this fleeing of the internet’s inner-city for the cleaner, fresher and safer suburbs of facebook.

I am a user of X3Watch which is accountability software for your computer.  It just kind of watches whenever you go anywhere you shouldn’t online.  Every time I went on to myspace to check my inbox, we got a message saying that I had been to a questionable website.  The website was myspace!  All I had to do was log-on and the Watch said, “uh oh!  Nothing good here!”  It’s like telling your parents, “Oh you know, I just drove over to the ghetto last night.”  They get really uncomfortable because they know there is nothing good over there.  That’s what my X3Watch did!

Another story came out recently affirming these things by looking at the difference in incomes of the average Myspace, Facebook, Twitter and Linkdin users.

Users earning more than $75000 in their household:
LinkedIn — 58.35 percent
Twitter — 43.34 percent
Facebook — 41.74 percent
MySpace — 32.38 percent

Users earning less than $50,000 in their household:
MySpace — 37.13 percent
Facebook — 28.42 percent
Twitter — 28.36 percent
LinkedIn — 17.34 percent
Here are some other interesting statistics from that story, found on CNN.

  • Almost 23% of facebook users earn more than $100,000 a year
  • 16% of myspace users earn over $100,000 a year
  • 38% of LinkedIn users earn more than $100,000 a year.

I thought this was all quite interesting, so I decided to share it with you.
