I am writing a paper on the Biblical defenses for the African Slave trade. Basically I am looking at sermons and religions writing from the 1840s and figuring out what Southerners believed was Christian about slavery. I am finding some interesting things and some discouraging things. Here is one of the discouraging things.
“Why a master cannot do to a servant as he would have him do to him, no more than a husband to a wife.”
-Thornton Stringfellow, 1841
In Short: Applying the Golden rule to a slave is as impractical as applying it to your wife.
